"Men-o-Pause" - Yes, men also go through this, it’s called Andropause!

Updated: Feb 1, 2021

Understanding Hormonal Changes as You Age

Over the past decade, it has become widely recognized that there is such a thing as

“male menopause.”

Everyone knows that women go through menopause, and many people understand that

men experience hormonal changes as they age too. In a loss in testosterone it’s

understandable and expected that “things change” within our body, our moods, and

overall well-being. Testosterone is one of our fountains of youth!

The fact is that many men do go through serious hormonal upheaval as they age.

Symptoms can be:

  • Low energy

  • Anxiety

  • Decreased libido

  • Depression or sadness

  • Decreased motivation

  • Lowered self-confidence

  • Difficulty concentrating

  • Insomnia or difficulty sleeping

  • Increased body fat

  • Reduced muscle mass and feelings of physical weakness

For women, menopause is a quick decline in the production of estrogen and

progesterone. Often, perimenopause starts before a women enters full menopause.

This is a transitional period marked by hormonal fluctuation that may last for years. The

ultimate result is a permanent end to a woman’s reproductive capacity.

For men, however, there is typically no sudden drop in sex hormones.

For Men, testosterone production typically begins to slow down in your early 30’s and

fully in your 40’s. Eventually, in some men, testosterone levels drop so low that they

cause symptoms that seem roughly equivalent to menopause. This is also known as

late-onset hypogonadism or age-related androgen deficiency, which is why we often

see it referred to as andropause.

Treatment Options for Male Menopause

With these symptoms in mind, this is why many men, like women experiencing

menopause, look to bio-identical hormone replacement pellet therapy. The

potential benefits of testosterone therapy for men are many, including increased muscle

mass and lower cardiovascular risk. Often, however, the most immediate benefits are

higher energy levels, restored libido, healthier weight control, and improved emotional

health.

The goal is recognizing that it is happening to you and understanding why. And, it does

not mean that is has to change who you are and just live with “it”. With hormone

replacement therapy, you can do something about it.
